Grants for the Indian Tribal Government Program are formulated to empower tribes to respond to violent crimes against Indian women, ensure safety of the victims and develop their education and preventive strategies. The Indian tribal governments or their authorized designees are provided with the grants enabling them to initiate actions and programs on awareness about increasing level of domestic violence and sexual assault against American women and Alaska native women.
The program further initiate response against victimization of women at the tribal, federal and state levels and gives all technical support to the coalition membership and tribal communities.According to the U.S government estimates, one among every four women has to succumb to domestic violence in her lifetime, and among them, 1.3 million women have already been victim of physical assault by their partners and one in every six women has to face physical rape at one or the other point of her life.
Alaska Native and other American Indian Women have to face more sexual assault and violence than women from any other racial or ethnic groups. The Office on Violence against Women currently presents 18 grants under the provision of the Violence Against Women Act of 1994.
These grant programs are designed to develop the nation’s capacity to reduce domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking by strengthening services to victims and holding offenders accountable for their actions. Since 2001, OVW has provided funds to around 80 projects, to the tune of around more than $24 million for tribal coalitions.
All the organizations catering to end the domestic violence and sexual assault against American Indian and Alaska Native Women and individuals or organizations are eligible for the grants. Within the precinct of the grants, there is also a provision for providing services for the relief of the victimized patients.
The program can be covered under the E.O. 12372, Intergovernmental Review of Federal Programs. Applicants should apply online through Grants.gov. The review of the application process will follow as per rules and regulations of the Office on Violence against Women Policies and Procedures for administering grant applications. The deadline for applying for the grants can be found by contacting Office of Violence against Women.
After the application is approved by the Office on Violence against Women, one letter is dispatched to the applicant agency with Grant Award, with one copy to be signed by an authorized official which is to be sent back to the Office of Justice Programs.
These grants are no doubt being given to the organizations and local tribal governments but ultimate beneficiaries are tribal victimized women as it is more convenient for the women to approach them rather than to approach government at the center.
